Hardware
TrailMesh7 runs on the RAKwireless WisMesh Tag — a card-sized LoRa node with GPS, a button and an IP66 case. One tag per person, plus one per tracker.
The TrailMesh7 kit — not yet shipping
A kit is a set of tags that arrive already running TrailMesh7 firmware, on the right band, ready to pair. Kits do not exist yet. There is no price and no date, and nothing on this page can be bought from us today. We will gauge the interest in Trailmesh7 kits to decide when to start offering them.
If you want one when they are ready, say so and we will write to you once:
That is a plain email — no payment, no account, and nothing stored beyond the message itself. Tell us how many tags and which band and the first reply can be a useful one.
Buying the tags yourself works perfectly well and is the only way to get started now. The rest of this page is how to do that.
Where to buy
Both of these are the same hardware. Buy from whichever suits your location and shipping.
- RAKwireless store — direct from the manufacturer.
- Rokland — US distributor, US915 stock.
We do not sell hardware and take no commission on either link.
Check the frequency before you order
A tag on the wrong frequency band cannot be fixed in software. It is the one mistake that cannot be undone after the parcel arrives, and the listings sell several bands from the same page.
Buy the band that is legal where you will use it — US915 in the United States and Canada, EU868 across most of Europe. If the listing offers a choice, it is on you to pick; if it does not, read the title, which usually names the band.
A tag will also sit there doing nothing if its region is simply unset, which is a different problem with an easy fix — see setup.
What else you need
Nothing, for an ordinary tag. A USB-C cable is worth having for the first firmware update and for charging.
The app is free and needs no subscription. See the FAQ for what works without a phone signal.
Firmware
Tags do not arrive ready for TrailMesh7. A tag bought from either link above ships with stock Meshtastic firmware, and the app will not operate with it — it shows you the update instead of opening.
That first update has to be done once from a computer over USB, because stock firmware reboots into a USB drive mode a phone cannot reach. After that, the app handles updates over Bluetooth. What the fork changes and why.
Tags in a TrailMesh7 kit will arrive already updated, once kits are available.
Meshtastic
TrailMesh7 tags run a modified version of the Meshtastic firmware, and the app speaks the Meshtastic protocol. Meshtastic is an independent open-source project; we are not affiliated with it or endorsed by it, and Meshtastic is a registered trademark of Meshtastic LLC, used here only to say what our tags run.
The firmware is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3. Our modifications are published under the same licence, and the complete corresponding source for the version on your tag is available at github.com/Jeff-Leviity7/firmware. The version string your tag reports — shown in the app under Tag Status — identifies the build.
If you would rather have the source on physical media, write to Support@levity7.com and we will arrange it.
None of the above applies to the TrailMesh7 app itself, which is a separate work.
